Commissioner

A European Commissioner is a member of the European Commission, which is the executive arm of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding EU treaties, and managing the day-to-day business of the EU.

The College of Commissioners consists of one Commissioner from each EU member state, including the President and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, making a total of 27 members.

Commissioners each hold a specific portfolio, which can range from areas such as trade, agriculture, and environment to competition, digital economy, and transport. They are responsible for making decisions on policy proposals, legislative initiatives, and budgetary allocations within their designated area of expertise.

The role of a Commissioner is to represent the interests of the EU as a whole, rather than their home country.

The Commissioners serve a five-year term, which is renewable. They work collectively in a system akin to a cabinet government, with each member contributing to the shaping of EU policies and decisions.
