Resignation

Resignation refers to the voluntary act of an official or staff member of an EU institution choosing to relinquish their position or office. Resignation can occur for a variety of reasons, including personal circumstances, career changes, or political reasons.

The process of resignation typically involves the submission of a formal notice by the individual to their superior or the relevant human resources department, specifying their intent to leave their post and the effective date of their departure.

Procedures for resignation are outlined in the Staff Regulations of Officials of the European Union and other relevant administrative guidelines, ensuring that the process is handled professionally and with due respect to the continuity of the institution’s work.

Importantly, if an EU institution’s staff member resigns on their own initiative, they are not entitled to the EU unemployment allowance.
